SDC and reverse osmosis: protection before and after the membrane

Osmosis removes salts; SDC helps face the biological challenge that continues to exist in the system's lines, filters, and tanks.

A moleculemultiple engineering disciplines
01

The reverse osmosis membrane is extraordinary for separating salts and dissolved contaminants, but it does not create a disinfectant residual. At the same time, biological growth increases pressure, energy consumption, cleaning frequency, and loss of availability.

ClO₂ has been studied both in pretreatment and in protecting filters and circuits. After the membrane, it can function as a microbiological layer for the tank and distribution—a use different from direct contact with the membrane.

01 · bottleneck

Biofouling is the Achilles' heel of RO

The npj Clean Water review highlights biological growth as one of the main costs and operational limits of reverse osmosis.

02 · opportunity

Control in filters and pre-treatment

A desalination study observed a reduction in biofouling potential in cartridge filters with lower ClO₂ concentration than chlorine under the tested conditions.

03 · project

Application point changes everything

ClO₂ before the membrane, circuit cleaning, and post-RO residual are distinct strategies; each requires its own compatibility and control.

A new layer of protection for osmosis

01

Reviews and field studies indicate the potential of chlorine dioxide to reduce biofouling in membrane systems.

02

In polyamide membranes, application point, purity, pH, and exposure time define the integration strategy.

03

With engineering and monitoring, ClO₂ opens a promising front to control the biological challenge before and after the membrane.

How to bring technology to operations

1

Map the problem

Identify if the source is in the raw water, pre-filters, membrane, permeate tank, or distribution.

2

Confirm compatibility

Cross-check membrane material, manufacturer limits, ClO₂ generation quality, and absence of unwanted oxidants.

3

Separate the barriers

Pretreatment protects the membrane; post-treatment protects storage and network. Mature projects do not confuse these functions.

What makes the project work

ClO₂ purity, dosing point, accumulated exposure, and membrane material form the project map. It is this precision that converts chemical potential into operational gain.
